Itinerary
The walk begins in the area of Plaza Rioshino, a small square used as a local reference point in the central zone of La Paz. From there the route moves toward Calle Jaén, one of the best-preserved colonial streets in the city, known for its cobblestone surface and a concentration of historic houses that now function as museums, including the Museo de Metales Preciosos and the Museo Costumbrista. Calle Jaén is associated with events from the late colonial period and the early independence era.

The route continues to Plaza Murillo, the political center of Bolivia. This square is bordered by the Presidential Palace, the National Congress, and the Metropolitan Cathedral of La Paz, making it a key site for civic life and public demonstrations. Nearby, the tour passes the San Pedro Penitentiary for an exterior visit. The prison, inaugurated in 1897, is still in use and is known for its distinctive presence within the urban grid of the city.
The walk then enters commercial zones that reflect everyday life in La Paz. Mercado Rodríguez operates as one of the city’s main food markets, supplying fruits, vegetables, grains, and meats to residents from surrounding neighborhoods. A short distance away, the Mercado de las Brujas specializes in ritual objects linked to Aymara traditions, such as offerings used in ceremonies to Pachamama. The itinerary also includes the Iglesia de San Francisco, a church originally founded in the 16th century and rebuilt in the 18th century, which has played a significant role in religious activity and social movements in La Paz.
