Walking Tour in Zagreb

Just a few steps away lies Manduševac, a historic spring and fountain that was once a crucial water source for Zagreb’s residents. According to legend, this is the site where Zagreb got its name, derived from the Croatian word “zagrabi,” meaning “to scoop,” supposedly uttered by a weary knight to a girl fetching water. Nearby, you’ll reach Zagrebačka katedrala (Zagreb Cathedral), whose twin spires dominate the city skyline. Originally built in the 13th century, the cathedral has been reconstructed multiple times due to invasions and earthquakes. Today, it holds the tomb of Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac and is the most significant Roman Catholic institution in Croatia.

The tour continues through Dolac Market, Zagreb’s main farmers’ market since 1930. This open-air market is where locals buy fresh produce, meats, cheeses, and handmade crafts from vendors who often travel from rural areas surrounding the city. From Dolac, you’ll stroll along Tkalčićeva ulica, a lively pedestrian street that follows the path of the former Medveščak stream, once the dividing line between two historic settlements: Gradec and Kaptol.
