Itinerary

The walk begins outside the main entrance to the fish market at Fiskebrygga, the harbor area developed in the 1990s on the site of former warehouses and docks. The waterfront is lined with wooden buildings inspired by traditional coastal architecture and is one of the city’s main maritime meeting points. From the harbor the route continues toward Kilden Performing Arts Centre, opened in 2012 as a joint venue for the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra, Agder Regional Theatre, and Opera Sør. Nearby stands Christiansholm Fortress, a small star-shaped fortress built in 1672 under the Danish-Norwegian king Christian V to protect the harbor entrance.

The route then leads into Posebyen, the largest remaining collection of wooden houses in the city center. Most of the buildings date from the late 18th and 19th centuries, after several fires destroyed earlier structures. Streets here follow the grid plan established when Kristiansand was founded in 1641 by King Christian IV of Denmark-Norway. The walk continues through the central square to Kristiansand Cathedral, completed in 1885 in Neo-Gothic style and serving as the seat of the Bishop of the Diocese of Agder og Telemark.

Along the waterfront stands Kunstsilo, a former grain storage facility from 1935 that was transformed into a museum for Nordic modernist art and opened to the public in 2024. The building preserves the original concrete silo structure while adding exhibition spaces and public terraces. Nearby, the route crosses the Slow Bridge, a pedestrian bridge designed to encourage walking and views across the harbor basin, before returning toward the city center and the area around Kristiansand Cathedral, one of the main landmarks of the historic grid-planned town.
